School mural unveiled on International Women’s Day
Cavendish Community Primary School marked International Women's Day on 8th March 2023 by unveiling its incredible mural of Margaret Ashton who campaigned for women's rights. Margaret Ashton (1856-1937) was Manchester's first female councillor and a strong advocate for social justice, suffrage, and pacifism, and has strong links to the school, having laid its foundation stone.
Ashton has been part of the curriculum at the school which has been to study local Manchester history and the suffragette movement.
Emma Bowen is the artist who created the original piece, which originally appeared in the book 'Women in Print' by Jane Bowyer. The image was translated into a mural by Russ Qubek and funded by Manchester City Council.
